A home for wells

Strengthen the ELR's home fleet and give "City of Wells" the loving, lifelong home she deserves.

Over the past two years we have been honoured to host Ex-Southern Railway Bulleid Light Pacific No. 34092 "City of Wells". Since her arrival at the East Lancashire Railway in July 2015, following a comprehensive overhaul, "Wells" has been a strong stalwart of our locomotive line-up. Come rain or shine, from snowy Santa Specials and haunted Halloween services to Steam Galas and luxury diners, "Wells" has proudly represented the ELR and done her bit for our cause and community. The locomotive has been such a mainstay of our work here that we would like to offer her a permanent home on the ELR.

Recently this beautiful engine has been put up for sale by her owners, her future destiny put in doubt, and we would be thrilled to add her strength to our own, increasing our own resources and resilience whilst at the same time providing what will be a loving home for an iconic  engine. Negotiations with the owners have seen an agreement reached for the ELR to purchase 34092, but we need your help to assist us in funding this acquisition, which will strengthen the railway's permanent fleet of home-based steam locomotives.

We have launched our "A Home for Wells" appeal to raise £340,920 towards the costs of purchasing 34092, enabling us to offer "Wells" the home she deserves at our railway. This is why we need to call upon the help of our ever present ELR family, volunteers and visitors alike, to support this cause.

ABOUT THE ENGINE
GET INVOLVED

“City of Wells” was built in 1949 at Brighton Works and spent its early life hauling express passenger trains on the Southern Region of British Railway, even working the “Golden Arrow” luxury boat train from London to Dover. This West Country Class was withdrawn from service in November 1964 and sent to Woodham Brothers Scrapyard in Barry Island, where it remained for seven years until it was purchased by its current owners, Richard Greenwood, Graham Bentley and John Adams, in 1971 and brought to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Since then, the loco, which returned to service in 1979, has worked all over the country on special charters and, following the completion of its 25 year restoration in 2014, has been a popular visiting engine at the East Lancashire Railway.

By making a donation, no matter how small, you will not only lighten-the-load on an already stretched home fleet, but provide a lifelong haven for the legendary locomotive.
